The Society for News Design is seeking an editor for the 30th edition of “The Best of Newspaper Design™” and a cover image for same edition.
The book editor produces the book as a work for hire for a stipend, and is credited as the editor. For more information or to apply, contact Marshall Matlock, Subject: Book Editor’s Position, by Oct. 31, 2008.
Book covers must be 9” x 12”. Add .25” on any side that bleeds to allow for trim. Submit high-resolution (300 dpi at full size) JPGs, TIFFs or PDFs by Nov. 27, 2008. Attach entries to an e-mail to Marshall Matlock. Include your name, job title, full business address, phone number and preferred e-mail address.
Book editor duties include, but are not limited to:
- developing specifications for the publication within the conditions of the publishing contract (the book is typically 272 pages or fewer)
- editing and/or supervising the editing of the competition-winning entries to a manageable number of images for inclusion in the book (this is usually performed at the competition judging over four days in Syracuse, N.Y., in February 2009).
- designing the book, including the chapter contents, and submitting an approved cover concept by the required deadline if the cover competition fails to produce an acceptable cover
- creating necessary cutlines, chapter text and indices as required by the Society
- viewing and correcting proofs and match prints
- ensuring that the Competition Director and the SND office review proofs before the pages are sent to the printer
- making all corrections as requested by the Competition Director, coordinating with the Competition Committee and SND office as needed, throughout the publication production process
- reviewing the bluelines and returning them with corrections or approval within 48 hours of receiving them from the printing company
- maintaining the highest degree of quality control throughout the production process
- meeting all deadlines and conditions specified by the publishing contract.
Submitted cover designs become the property of the Society for News Design. Entries will be judged by a panel with the winner notified on or about Dec 20, 2008. The winning cover design will be used for the 30th Edition book with credit given to the designer.
