Douglas Okasaki, SND director for Region 20 (Middle East and Africa), discovered new insights into the Arab press when he made a presentation on news design at the IFRA Middle East Conference 2008 in Cairo, Egypt, last week. About 120 professionals from 20 countries attended the IFRA Middle East technology and publishing conference.

Douglas Okasaki shared a session on branding with Marc Sands, marketing director of The Guardian Newspaper, UK. In preparing a presentation on news design and branding, Douglas found many sources on the individual topics, but not much on combining the two.
“Design is an important tool for branding strategy,” Douglas said, but it can’t stand alone. “The entire company should have a total quality attitude,” he said.
At the end of the conference, a panel discussed local requirements for the Middle East press. “Of course,” Douglas said, “I used this opportunity to advise that it is important to invest in the visual aspects of a publication to attract young readers.”
SND and IFRA have worked together at design workshops and conferences before, but this was the first time that SND participated in the Middle East conference. “The conference was very informative and provided a clear overview of what’s going on in the press industry in this region,” Douglas reported.
