Society President Gayle Grin announced this week that Matt Martel joins the SND board as country coordinator of Australia and New Zealand. Martel is the Managing Editor, Presentation for The Sydney Morning Herald. Martel was in charge of design and graphics at The Age in Melbourne, and had the same role at the New Zealand Herald in Auckland.
“Matt is dedicated to grow and support SND members and will work closely with Felix Soh in the Asia/Pacific region,” Grin said.
Martel recently joined the Sydney Morning Herald, where he is helping the newspaper see the ways design can help drive growth.
Martel has a good track record from his time at The Age: The circulation is increasing rapidly, currently at its highest in 18 years. The Sunday paper is up nearly 20 percent year on year. Strong design is a contributor to this success. The Age is in a very competitive market (against two other paid dailies and a free one). The paper is are also getting involved in multimedia, 3D graphics and integrating print and online operations.
“The way that Matt has helped his news organization see how to use design to drive growth is wonderful,” Grin said. “Our hope is that he can help others see the power of design thinking, as well as the value of networking to learn.”
Martel plans to create a network of visual journalists who can share stories.
