  • Not a single Canadian judge. At least internationally one-third of the judges are from outside the US, but it seems odd that there is not more representation from growing markets versus the heavily retracting US market.

  • Fine people there in the BC, too!

I feel Canada’s pain but find it ever more curious that the there are also no judges from world’s most populous democracy. A county of voracious newspaper readers and wealthy publishing houses, to boot!

  • Judges from several countries, including Canada and India, were invited but some people simply could not attend. The Society for News Design does all it can to recruit jurors from a diverse pool and SND pays all expenses for those who are judging in an effort to truly represent the world of news design. We’re doing our best to increase international representation on the judging panel, while also maintaining a high standard. Please suggest potential jurors, if you have ideas. • Curious, I recall an email going around the newsroom calling for “volunteers” for the judging weekend, but the volunteers were expected to pay their own way. I can understand the SND can’t afford to fly in everyone, especially given the cost of flights between Canada-US/International cities-US. I’m not aware how your organization selects judges but there can’t be too many Canadian members, surely someone could have said yes.

I am looking forward to the National Post winning a disproportionate number of awards compared to other papers like last year. Surprising how few awards the Globe and Mail wins when in my opinion it’s a much better paper. (And to be clear, I work for neither).

  • Frank: SND does need volunteers to handle all the facilitation duties, which includes putting out pages, inputting winning entries, processing entries, and assisting with myriad other duties. Those people all come at their own expense. And SND appreciates all that help. Without them, SND would not be able to handle this massive competition year after year.

But judges are a different story: SND does pay all expenses for the people selected to jury the competition. Those people are among the best in their field and they need not be SND members to be chosen (many are not).

As for Canada, specifically, there was a person asked from The Globe and Mail. That person said yes and then canceled. It was too late to find someone else from Canada as a replacement. So know that we did try.

As for that criticism about results, I can only say that a different panel of judges assesses the work every year. We do that to try to avoid bias for any particular publication.

  • The ultimate problem, though, is that no one in the panel seems to have anything other than a PFAD background. I’d say the chances are strong to quite strong that the level of ignorance about things like story play/importance is high to quite high.

  • How do you know the knowledge about hystory that the judges have?
