The judges made quick work of their first pass through Category One. After meeting and greeting at a late lunch, the international group got down to business in a hurry, taking the 343 total entries (in all sizes and divisions) down to less than 50 survivors. There were so many outtakes already, in fact, that the crew is on to their second dumpster already. The remaining entries will be carefully scrutinized when the group resumes early Saturday.
The judges are knocking off for the day — many had travel troubles getting to Syracuse and most have body clocks still set on faraway time zones. We hope to steal some time with each of the judges as they proceed through the later rounds to ask what they’re looking for, what trends they’re seeing, what defines the state of the industry, and so on. If you have something you want to ask the judges, email your questions to The Blog at sndwebdesk@gmail.com

Thanks for keeping us up to date, Steve. Wondering for the judges: How did they make such a quick cut? They must know what they are looking for in an innovative paper.
Thanks, Matt. Yes, in fact, that’s one of the questions I want to pursue with the judges tomorrow. As they begin to dig into the second round I want to chat with each of them to probe just what is it they’re looking for in a WB paper. They had a chance to really talk it through for the first time tonight at dinner and I think they have some very strong impressions already. Stayed tuned at snd.org/update—I hope to get them talking in just a few hours.
Must be a hard work, kicking out, cutting of – until survival of the fittest: is that why you have a patterned carpet in there – not to see any blood stains on the floor?
Have a good time together and thank you for letting us witness what you´re doing over there!!!
Greetings from Germany, Simone
