The Society for News Design Foundation has awarded 19 grants to help visual journalism students attend SND’s 30th Annual Workshop & Exhibition, Sept. 7-9, 2008, in Las Vegas.

A new nine-member Competition Committee has been appointed by Competition Committee Director Marshall Matlock. This is the first major change to the committee since it was established.

Dennis Varney, the lead sports designer at the Lexington Herald-Leader, has been named the 30th Edition Coordinator for SND’s upcoming Best of Newspaper Design™ Creative Competition.

SND’s 3D graphics QuickCourse was in San Francisco this weekend for a two-day workshop focused on Newtek’s LightWave. SND Update caught up with the course’s two speakers, South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Len DeGroot and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Steve Wilson, along Ocean Beach outside San Francisco’s Beach Chalet.

The College News Design Contest, co-sponsored by SND, is hosted each spring at the Missouri School of Journalism. The big day for print judging was Tuesday. Judges reviewed 650 entries from daily and non-daily college papers. Kate LaRue and Rob Byrd were named student designers of the year.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Len DeGroot and Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Steve Wilson demonstrate some 3D techniques at the Kent State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication SND Quick Course.

If you would like your name placed on the “master” list of possible judges for upcoming news design competitions this posting is for you. Judges are selected by the Competition Committee from the master list that is continually updated. One does not have to be an SND member to be a judge. You may nominate yourself if you wish.
