Society President Gayle Grin announced this week that Jon Wile is the new regional director of the East Coast Metro region, which includes New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. Wile takes over from Shraddha Swaroop, who resigned to return to California. Wile is a front page designer at The Washington Post during the election and inauguration period. His full-time role is as The Post’s lead sports designer.
Wile has been at The Post for three and a half years. Before that he was a sports designer at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland. He went to school at Kent State in Ohio and also interned at the Detroit Free Press.
“Jon impresses me as a very dedicated journalist who understands the commitment it takes to be an SND leader,” Grin said.
Wile has been a member of SND since his junior year of college and his work has been recognized by the Student Society for News Design competition, the annual Best of Newspaper Design competition, the Associated Press Sports Editors contest, and Print. He regularly goes back to Kent State to speak and has also taught news design at the University of Maryland the last three semesters.
“My hope is to continue the visual mission that SND has started by increasing interaction between our current members and new-to-the-field journalists in the region,” Wile said. “My top priority is to meet and correspond with members, finding out what is important to them and how the Society can better serve the ever-changing visual community.”
Wile has contributed to Design and Update, participated in a sports design Quick Course in Detroit, and spoke with Post colleague Greg Manifold at this year’s annual workshop, SND Vegas, so he’s already involved with many things the Society does.
“Jon definitely has a passion for sharing the craft,” Grin said. “I’m confident he will be a wonderful representative for some of the largest U.S. markets in his new role for the Society.”
