A new nine-member Competition Committee has been appointed by Competition Committee Director Marshall Matlock. This is the first major change to the committee since it was established.
Competition Committee members, who report to Matlock, help make major and minor decisions about The Best of Newspaper Design™ competition’s long- and short-term goals. Its first major task this fall is the selection of the 32 judges needed for the 30th Edition judging, which will take place at Syracuse University in February.
The Committee, using a “master” list of possible jurors, will approve the judges at a private meeting in September at SND’s Las Vegas Workshop & Exhibition.
New members, who begin their work immediately, are:
Chris Courtney, design director, Redeye, Chicago, Ill.
Jeremy Gilbert, managing editor, Innovation, The Poynter Institute St. Petersburg, Fla.
Tiffany Pease, news design director San Jose Mercury News, San Jose, Calif.
Becky Pendergast, assistant managing editor for art, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Washington, D.C.
Mike Rice, visual team leader for design & graphics, Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, Ariz.
Colin Smith, design editor, The Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake City, Utah
Dennis Varney, lead sports designer, Lexington Herald-Leader, Lexington, Ky.
Shamus Walker, entry audit director, Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y.
Michael Whitley, assistant managing editor, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, Calif.
Last week, Matlock announced the appointment of Varney as the 30th Edition coordinator.
