Mike Higdon, Nevada Sagebrush’s Public Editor and 2007 SSND Designer of the Year, spent his session extolling the benefits of thinking about print and online design as conversations with your community and campus.
Throughout the session, Mike highlighted functional examples of this conversation happening both at Sagebrush and papers abroad. He finds success in this when the informative and journalistic attributes of a story are married to a presentation or format that can further generate discussion among those in your community and between your publication and the community. This can further excel in a campus setting where there’s a willingness to experiment with new technologies that will engage with the young audiences.
Quote: “In order to get this conversation going, you need to have a good website — a good social network.”
Idea to steal: Utilize existing services and platforms, such as social networks, online services, community groups and meetings, etc., to connect with your audience in a different, lively way. Take, for example, SND’s utilization of Flickr, Twitter and Vimeo to broadcast the events going on across the SND Vegas conference.
Bridget O’Donnell live-blogged the session, which includes some links Mike showed and live commentary.
Mike also has a handout available on his site.
